Alison Friend Art Studio

Designed and built as a truly bespoke creative workspace, the Alison Friend Art Studio is a one-off building shaped entirely around how the space would be used, experienced and enjoyed.

The exterior combines larch cladding in varying widths and thicknesses, giving the building depth, texture and a natural rhythm that will weather beautifully over time. This is complemented by real stone inserts supplied by QLA Interiors, adding weight and permanence to the overall design.

A custom corten steel sign, fabricated by Dave Rees Metal Designs, features Alison’s logo and provides an unexpected moment of detail — a subtle but distinctive surprise that reinforces the individuality of the studio.

Measuring 30sqm, the building includes a generous overhanging canopy, creating a sheltered threshold and extending the usable space beyond the studio itself. Large bi-fold doors open the studio up to the garden, while high-level letterbox windows on the rear elevation bring in natural light without compromising privacy.

Internally, the corner of the studio forms a snug seating area, framed by a pair of corner windows with integral blinds, offering views back into the garden and creating a calm, reflective space within the wider studio.

Every element of the building — from materials to layout to detailing — was designed specifically for this project.
The result is a completely bespoke art studio, full of character, warmth and thoughtful design, and a clear reflection of our approach to creating spaces that are anything but standard.
